President Muhammedu Buhari, promised Nigerians during the last presidential election of his willingness to tame the tide of insecurity in the country. His party faithfuls were vocal, and he was optimistic because of his acclaimed experience as a military general.
The barbaric act of the Boko haram fighters in the North east and the Fulani herdsmen attack on farmers, has constituted a great threat to our collective security.
The continuous attack by the two most dreaded groups in Nigeria, made it's citizenry to believe that the immediate past president lacks the will to restore peace to the land.
In the aftermath of the last presidential election, and the APC victory at the poll, Nigerians were filled with smiles as they hope for a swift response from the federal government to turn the tide against this marauders.
Soonest than least expected, this hope was dashed when the Fulani herdsmen attacked Agatu community in Benue State. They met no resistance from our security apparatus and went on rampage, killed about 500 defenceless villagers, burnt down houses, raped the teenage girl's at sight. The Federal government ineptitude towards alleviating their plight left the victims to their fate. My heart bleeds with grief, as I Wonder if Agatu community is no longer part of Nigeria.
As if this was not enough, they set out and attacked a community in my state, Enugu State. But this time, they were repelled by the brave and vigilant youths of the land, who refused to be discouraged by the non commitment of those responsible for the protection of lives and property.
The Federal government insincerity played out, when they arrested this youth who rose up in defense of their lives and property and charged them to court. Most worrisome, is the report of no arrest against this invaders.
Tell me, why would the Federal government arrest people who are only exercising their fundamental human right to self defense? If our security apparatus had come to their rescue, would they had rose against the invaders of their fathers land?
It is no doubt, that the Federal government insincerity to tame this marauders has made them tripled their attacks.
Some might have a discerning view, but the audacious incursions of others people territory would had been contained if the Federal government is sincere because this marauders aren't faceless.
It is sarcastic for the federal government to promote small and medium scale farming by preaching diversification of the economy, when in essence it can't protect those who hid it's advice.
The devastation on their farms caused by the incursion of this herdsmen has made most farmers either beggars or debtors. Therefore, the Federal government is called upon to make its stance known. And, if it has the people at heart, he should as a matter of urgency, fashion out a way to put a stop to this wanton destruction of lives and property by this marauders. Hence, majority of Nigerians will live with the view, that the violent act of this herdsmen is aided by those in high places of Northern extraction, who owns this cattle.
All stakeholders must come together as one Nigeria, least, their subsequent violent actions might be met with reprisals, which will in turn create ethnic tension that wont auger well for our fledgling democracy.
